LP of the Month
Galt MacDermot
Up from the Basement
(Kilmarnock)
As you can see from the picture, we're showing off. We've been sent a test press of an upcoming LP of unreleased Galt recordings. So show off we must. This album is to be on full release shortly (US pressing), but we are unsure of the final track listing and can only hope everything on this demo copy comes out. It's a long overdue trawl through acetates (two deadly Coffee Cold-era cuts, with crackles and all), backing-track tapes (a Melba Moore demo!), jams (an unheard take of "Metal Explosions") and even a piece of violin groove from an outdoor Shakespeare performance. A true gem of an LP, it shows such an array of Galt's versatility as an award-winning composer, arranger and pianist - a carousel of styles from hard, psychedelic pop to moody, drifting soundscapes, all beautiful and all neglected 'til now. Buy this album! Any fool who missed the last issue, order one now and read the Galt MacDermot interview and profile. Also available is a live LP, taken from Egon's "Ultimate Breaks and Beats II" show in Nashville, not to mention the jazz CDs that Galt is still recording on Kilmarnock.
